Big Savings & Accelerated Timeline / March Month in Review
The West Valley School District is excited to share a spring update on the construction timeline for the new Summitview and Apple Valley Elementary Schools. Because we were able to come in under budget, including a 300k saving on contractor costs, we are now able to begin construction of Summitview Elementary in May, three months ahead of the original start date of July. With Apple Valley already underway and starting Summitview construction much earlier than planned the district has a better opportunity to finish the two buildings in time for the start of the 2021-22 school year.
Project management team CBRE | Heery has done an outstanding job directing these projects. Architect, Design West has worked closely with the district and school staff to produce efficient, targeted designs. Chervenell Construction Co. has provided critical feedback during the design phase and has been a key player in the bidding management and permitting processes. Bid packages were developed early and our team worked to generate a great deal of interest in the West Valley projects. Bids came in very aggressively during the bid opening on April 1. As a result, West Valley was able to secure outstanding rates and come in under budget for both projects. The significant savings has allowed the district to front fund the Summitview building, rather than waiting for state funding.
Rob Gross, CBRE | Heery senior project manager, said this is the biggest savings he has seen in his nearly 30-year career.
The accelerated timeline would not have been possible without the sacrifice of the Apple Valley and Summitview staff and students who have joined forces at the Freshman campus during construction. Vacating the two sites has allowed the district move quickly on this enormous opportunity.
This achievement was made possible through a culmination of successes, including great partnership between the district and the project management team, a quick turnaround on permit review from the City of Yakima, as well as strategic bond sales at low interest rates.
